Teaching responsibility is the most difficult task that is faced by many parents and it becomes all the more difficult if the child is of a rebellious nature. In order to instill those good habits, it is necessary to start teaching responsibility to a child at a tender age. It is also ideal for the parent to let the child know of his wrongful acts as well as his good deeds and it is necessary for the child to understand that he or she is responsible for the consequences that arise out of his or her actions. The teaching responsibility of the parents is nearly complete when the child actually realizes that he or she is responsible for the outcome of the actions or decisions that they make.

It is very difficult teaching responsibility to a teenager as most of the teenagers do not want to obey their parents or are more inclined to a rebellious nature. Moreover, by the time they attain their teenage years, they might have developed their own way of doing things and this may be without regard of anyone else or anything else. Therefore, it becomes very difficult for the parent to change their child’s adopted lifestyles. It is necessary that, while teaching responsibility, the child should be of the age to understand and imbibe all that is taught to him. So, it is better to start teaching the simple steps of responsibility from the age of five to six as it is the right around the best age to begin to mold a child’s character.

If the child does not learn responsibilities; such as keeping his room clean, helping the parents in household chores, taking care of his books and clothes etc, even after attaining the teenage years, mild punishments like restricting his freedom or cutting the chore money are often beneficial in bringing the child back on the right track. For teaching responsibility to the child, the parents themselves should be a role model and show the child the right path to follow as well as to make the child better able to stand on his or her own feet come adulthood.
